Item: This is an antique cranberry glass patch box. These were used for make up, powder or patches to cover skin flaws - a precursor to the more modern idea of a beauty mark. The pontil mark on the bottom attests to this having been at least partially hand blown. Many of these were made in the Bohemian glass making region we now know as the Czech Republic and many are attributed to the famous glass maker Moser. Two American manufacturers are well known for this particular style of hand enameled glass including the Boston And Sandwich Glass Company and Westmoreland Glass Company. The former being the originator of this style named for the artist who designed and decorated these pieces in the late Victorian period by the name of Mary Gregory. The latter using her name describing their work as Mary Gregory style.
